🚨 New Experiment Alert: Meet Mixboard
An AI-powered concepting board designed to be a creative partner for your ideas
I’m so excited to share the latest experiment from my team in Google Labs, which officially launched yesterday!
Introducing Mixboard: an AI-powered concepting board designed to be your creative partner. It helps you visually explore, expand, and refine anything you can imagine, moving seamlessly from a messy brainstorm to a polished concept.
With Mixboard’s open canvas and generative AI capabilities, you can:
Generate unique visuals and text from a simple prompt.
Edit your board with natural language commands.
Create new versions of your ideas with one-click options.
To give you a taste, I put together a quick board for a kid-friendly recipe book idea. It’s amazing how fast you can build a visual story!
Mixboard is now available in the U.S. in public beta. You can read the official announcement on the Google Blog and try it out for yourself at labs.google.com/mixboard.
Why Launch an Experiment Now? Three Big Reasons
This experiment is very much an MVP (Minimum Viable Product), but I am thrilled to get it out into the world. Here’s why:
1. The Power of Building in Public
I strongly believe that right now, building in public is the best way to get an early signal on what’s sticking with users. It exposes you to the good, the bad, and the buggy, faster than any internal process ever could. For example, we’re already getting invaluable feedback on missing features (like the ability to sketch directly in a prompt) and UX flaws. One user shared a board, but it was still private - a perfect, real-world signal that our sharing modal wasn’t clear enough. This kind of raw, immediate feedback is gold.
2. The Joy of Unexpected User Creativity
Honestly, one of the most fun parts of launching is seeing what people build - ideas I would have never thought of myself. The creativity has been incredible. We’ve already seen a dad, stuck at home with his sick three-year-old, “jamming out” making fun boards.
Another user created an amazing “Easy Rider” inspired concept.
And I can definitively say that a “Pigeon Dating App” was not on my Use Case BINGO card, but here we are, and it’s brilliant.
3. Pushing the Future of AI Interaction
Mixboard’s open canvas feels like a fun new way to play with generative AI, opening up new possibilities for how we interact with these powerful models. The future of AI-native User Experience (UX) is still such an untapped and exciting area. I want to keep pushing, playing, and experimenting in this space to help figure out what’s next.
Labs is all about exploring the future, and Mixboard is a perfect example of that. We’re incredibly excited about its potential to reimagine how we bring ideas to life. This is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to see what you create. 🚀
