Inside Launch Mode: Tactics for the Final Sprint
Practical ways I navigate the intensity and keep things moving as Google I/O approaches
With Google I/O just 13 days away (deep breaths!), the Launch Mode lifestyle is in full swing. Last week, I wrote about the 5 Principles of Launch Mode – the strategic mindset needed. This week, I want to give you more of a peek behind the curtains at the actual tactical changes that happen in my day-to-day routine during this high-intensity period.
Because knowing the principles is one thing; living them requires adapting how you work. Let’s dive into some practical ways I navigate Launch Mode...
1. Embrace the Chat Room Deluge (The New HQ)
Emails feel glacial during Launch Mode. They get overlooked, formatting hinders quick back-and-forths, and accidentally forked threads are communication black holes. Chat rooms become the command center.
Why Chat Wins: It encourages quicker responses and allows for targeted threading. You can ask multiple related questions in separate threads within the same room, tagging only the relevant people for each specific question, while keeping the broader context visible. It’s far more efficient than juggling multiple emails repeating the same context.
Spin-Up Culture: While I'm always in many chat rooms, Launch Mode sees a rapid proliferation of smaller, temporary "working group" rooms spun up on demand to tackle specific, urgent issues. They often dissolve right after launch, but they are vital arteries of communication during the sprint.
2. Impromptu Video Calls: The Quick Escalation
Sometimes even chat isn't fast enough for nuanced issues involving just one or two key stakeholders. If a quick chat exchange starts getting complex, I won't hesitate to drop an instant video call link – squeezed in whenever possible. It's often the absolute fastest way to hash something out and get aligned in real-time.
3. Live in Your Product (Dogfood Religiously)
This might seem obvious, but it's more critical than ever during Launch Mode: Use your product. Constantly.
Find the Bugs: File them meticulously. Be the harshest critic.
Sweat the Details: Notice the small UI glitches, the awkward flows, the slightly off copy.
Know Every Corner: Understand the entire experience inside and out, including edge cases. Deep ownership is non-negotiable for launching something great, and catching issues before launch is paramount.
4. Capture Midnight Ideas (The Bedside Brain Dump)
My brain buzzes non-stop during Launch Mode, often leading to 3 AM wake-ups filled with ideas or worries. Trying to ignore them is futile. The simple, effective solution: keep a pen and pad of paper by the bed. Sleepily jotting down the core idea gets it out of my head and usually lets me get back to sleep. This happens way more often during Launch Mode, so having that notepad ready becomes essential self-management.
